Discretionary Income

Use Discretion. One of the Semcasting Affluence Indicators, this index measures Discretionary Income, the amount of money a household has left for spending after the basic needs of housing, food, and clothing are met. For our index, the amount of money a household expends on education, healthcare and transportation is also considered.

The major challenges with estimating discretionary income are:

• Establishing a holistic view of all the household assets
• Correctly estimating household income
• Assessing life stage and major purchase factors such as college tuition, home mortgages, and automated savings plans that tend to depress spending capacity yet do not materially affect net worth

We pick up where others leave off. Virtually all of the available Discretionary Income estimates are based on summarized banking information or aggregated credit usage. Most national discretionary income estimates are built as a single, nationally based predictive model, which can be misleading because account balances and credit are actually a more strict measure of cash availability than discretionary income. A national model built on credit typically overlooks or generalizes local cost of living issues, and also ignores life stage information at the household level. The combination of all these factors reduces accuracy. The ability to build hundreds of models at the local level allows Semcasting to leverage nuances such as cost of living, effective tax rates, and local home values. With the inclusion of life stage data and the more accurate Semcasting’ Household Income Estimate, marketers now have a far better capacity to target the audience that has the available resources to afford the products or services being offered.

Improve accuracy when targeting customers. Semcastings’ Premium Income Estimate is highly precise income data that provides increased accuracy when targeting customers. Built from publicly available sources and self-reported actual income, the Income Estimate was modeled using Semcasting patented genetic algorithm technology, and has been validated against households across the U.S.

What makes it unique? Semcastings' Income Estimate incorporates regional models that reflect market conditions for various geographic areas. The resulting income estimates measure affluence levels of prospective customers with up to 60% more accuracy than leading data aggregators' equivalent scores. Semcasting's data is especially accurate when locating households with earnings in excess of $150,000, measuring up to $2 million in household income.

Recession Sensitivity Ranking

With businesses cutting back or closing, financial service organizations under pressure, and unemployment approaching 8% or more in some states, there are an increasing number of households across the country that are susceptible to, or currently experiencing, increased financial pressure.  The RSR score is designed to provide early guidance to marketers on targeting these households.

Some of the household data included in the models are Semcasting discretionary income, home ownership data and household composition including age, education and children.  The RSR models are created and applied at a local and household level for improved precision.

RSR identifies how vulnerable a particular household may be in the current economic climate.  When used in combination with Premium Income (to $2 million) and the expanded Semcasting Adjusted Home Values (to $10 million), the RSR can provide your clients with early insight to at-risk households.  These households may be candidates for certain types of financial remediation products or services, or used in the suppression of certain households to refine your targeting in acquisition campaigns
